We talk a lot about postpartum depression. We’re starting to talk more about postpartum anxiety. But there’s another experience many moms quietly carry shame about:
Postpartum rage.
If you’ve found yourself snapping faster than you ever have, feeling overstimulated by the sound of your baby crying, or going from calm to furious in seconds — you are not crazy. You are not failing. And you are absolutely not alone.
What Is Postpartum Rage?
Postpartum rage isn’t an official diagnosis, but it’s a very real and common symptom of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. It can show up as:
- Sudden outbursts of anger
- Feeling constantly irritated or on edge
- Yelling and then immediately feeling guilt or shame
- Resentment toward your partner
- Overwhelm that turns into explosive reactions
- Feeling touched out, overstimulated, or trapped
Many women describe it as feeling like they are “not themselves.”
Why Does It Happen?
After having a baby, your body and brain go through enormous changes:
- Massive hormonal shifts
- Severe sleep deprivation
- Identity changes
- Increased mental load
- Pressure to “do it all” and look grateful
Rage is often a signal that your nervous system is overloaded. It’s what can happen when anxiety, exhaustion, unmet needs, and invisible labor build up without relief.
And here’s something important:
Anger is often the surface emotion. Underneath it is usually fear, sadness, loneliness, or feeling unseen.
The Shame Spiral
Most moms don’t talk about postpartum rage because it feels scary to admit.
You love your baby.
You wanted this.
You should feel grateful.
So when anger shows up, shame quickly follows.
But anger does not mean you are a bad mother. It means you are overwhelmed. It means your body is asking for support.
When to Reach Out
If you notice that:
- You feel out of control of your reactions
- You are yelling more than you’d like
- You feel constantly resentful or on edge
- You are having intrusive thoughts
- You don’t recognize yourself
It’s time to talk to someone.
You do not have to wait until it gets worse. You do not have to “power through.” And you do not need to figure this out alone.
